"Nose as Brancusi’s Abstract Guard Dog" is one of Carol Ho’s latest eccentric portraits series “Modernism Stuck in My Head”, in which you will find disturbing mini modernism sculptures stuck out the faces of the figures. This small portraits series started in 2016. Her cartoonish murky images and kitschy painting style can be considered as sarcastic comments toward the well-embraced aesthetic values in the mainstream art world. Like Ho’s other works, this painting series reveals her attempt at stirring and subverting conventional figurative painting, with images borrowed from the popular subculture and the influential mid-century modernism sculptures. These eerie paintings allow viewers to catch a glimpse of Ho’s weird fantasy world of internalised symbols with familiar references which are against norm and logic. 

 
Nose as Brancusi’s Abstract Guard Dog 是何藹恩的新作品系列題 “Modernism Stuck in My Head”其中一張作品, 畫中的人頭面上均長出一個小小的迷你現代主義雕像。這個小形半身肖像系列始於2016 年,其暗黑風格的卡通畫像造形帶有媚俗色彩的畫風,可視為對現今主流擁抱的美學價值的譏諷和批評。一如何氏以往的創作,這次是透過借用次文化流行圖像和上世紀的現代主義風格雕像,試圖挑戰和顛覆傳統具像畫的規條。透過這系列怪異的畫作,觀眾能一睹何氏那充滿熟悉又陌生的形象,卻又背離規範與邏輯的想像世界。 

  
 
 
About Artist 關於藝術家 
 
Carol Ho was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1991. During her high school years, she developed a strong interest in art through her teachers' encouragement, which led her to pursue visual arts in college. In 1998, she graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Upon recommendation from her professors, she was accepted into the Printmaking Department at the Royal College of Art in London, where she earned her Master's degree in 2001. Carol currently lives and works in Hong Kong. Her work has been exhibited internationally in galleries across Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. 

 
何藹恩生於香港，1991年隨家人移民加拿大。在中學時期，在老師的鼓勵下，她對藝術產生了濃厚興趣，大學時期決心專修視覺藝術。1998年，她在卡加利大學獲得純美術學士學位。在教授的推薦下，她於1999年獲英國皇家美術學院版畫系錄取，並於2001年獲得碩士學位。何藹恩現居於香港工作和生活，。她的作品曾在世界各地廣泛展出，包括加拿大、德國、香港、意大利、日本和英國等地。
