The piece is about the scar on my mother's back from her surgery, as well as the reason why I made it. Since the emotional bonding to my mother and the healing process were complicated to express verbally, I decided to stitch it down. The slow, meditative act of stitching allows me to process and navigate these conflicts with patience. While we cannot choose who to be our parents, we can choose how to settle our emotions.
Artist bio
Kate Cheung is a multidisciplinary artist based in Hong Kong, specializing in moving image, media art, textile art, and poetry. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.
By merging threads, fabric, and digital imagery, Kate creates a unique visual language that conveys meaning through form and texture. Her art reflects both how and where she lives, unveiling the lingering shadows of her childhood trauma while exploring contemporary femininity. Raised in a traditional Asian family, she carries the weight of that upbringing but courageously offers her personal perspective through her artistic practice, allowing her deepest thoughts and emotions to take shape and resonate with others.
She has been featured in prominent international events, including the Taipei Art Book Fair 2023, the 4th BOOKED: Hong Kong Art Book Fair, and the 4th Hong Kong Book Art Festival. In addition to presenting a solo talk at Lemna of The Alchemist, Kate has participated in duo exhibitions at Yrellag Gallery in 2023 and Pointsman Artspace in 2024.
Kate Cheung
