About Artist
Lin Fengmian(1900-1991), born in the Meixiandistrict of Guangdong, was one of the earliest advocates and representative figures of the "fusion of Eastern and Western art" in modern Chinese art history and exerted a profound influence on the development of 20th-century Chinese art.
As a modern artist and art educator, Lin Fengmianstudied Western painting in France in his earlier years, and dedicated himself to art education after returning to China. In 1928, with the support of Cai Yuanpei, he helped found the National Academy of Art (later renamed the Hangzhou National College of Art, and predecessor to the China Academy of Art), and was appointed as the first President and a Professor of the Academy. A great number of talents were nurtured under his artistic philosophy and practice, including artists who later became internationally renowned such as ZaoWou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, and Wu Guanzhong.
