About Artist

For more than 60 years, the Shanghai-born artist Irene Chou (1924—2011, Zhou Luyan) made art in Hong Kong and Australia with a passion as singularly individual as her painting. Her position at the centre of Hong Kong’s New Ink Painting Movement was vital to her success and her rich legacy.  Her oeuvre serves to remind us that the voyage of an artist seeking an individual voice through their art is never an easy one.

Irene Chou was a courageous artist, never afraid to challenge herself through her art. We see this in the two works in this show: the dramatic abstract Impact V and the still, stripped-down figurative abstraction. These paintings speak to something of Chou’s quirky sense of humour and vitality

On her artistic voyage, Irene Chou was inspired by her father, who taught her calligraphy, something that informs all her art.  Later artists and teachers as different as Zhao Shao’ang (1905—1998), in the 1950s, and Lui Shou-Kwan (1919--1975), in the 1960s and early 1970s, encouraged new life in her art. Both inspired her to look at the world beyond herself to lend her art unique vitality.

Irene Chou listened carefully, took the best of their teachings and embraced life to the fullest. Chou was a partner to change and a witness to how art influences and inspires life.
